Allina Health is partnering with Free Bikes 4 Kidz to give bikes to kids in need. Donate gently used or new child or adult bikes Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at most Allina Health hospitals and clinics. The first 50 donors at each location get a free T-shirt. We are pleased to announce that there are two exciting opportunities to spread the word about non-motorized transportation - that's biking and walking to us regular folk!!
On Wednesday, September 13 from 4-5p we will be joining with the Saint Paul Police Department in a STOP FOR ME event to promote pedestrian safety. Volunteers will be crossing McKnight Road at Villages on McKnight to demonstrate the cross-walk laws in our state. Police officers will be ticketing drivers who do not yield to pedestrians, as a way to raise awareness that a pedestrian has the right-of-way at ANY marked or unmarked crosswalk (intersection). Too many pedestrian's are being hurt or killed simply trying to cross our streets. So join us for this important event.
The on Wednesday, September 27 from 5:30 -7:30p, there will be another SLOW ROLL across the East Side. This event will be an opportunity for bike riders of all ages and abilities, all backgrounds and experiences to tour a portion of the East Side. We will begin at the East Side Freedom Library (1105 Greenbrier) and wind our way down to Phalen Blvd and back. It is about a 5.5 mile ride and we go as slow as the slowest rider with help from marshals who stop traffic at intersections and keep track of how everyone is doing. The ride culminates with a free meal brought to you by a local business. This event is a partnership between Cycles for Change, Smart Trips, the Freedom Library and East Side district councils, including District 1.

There are 125 maps with some counties split into more than one sheet. You can click on a county name to see trails, road conditions and more. Print the maps on 8.5x11 or 11x17 paper to take along to help navigate your trip.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there about decisions regarding the Upper Afton bike lanes to be added this summer... THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FINAL DECISION MADE YET ABOUT THE PARKING RESTRICTIONS!! Unfortunately, the County has posted signs to say they are beginning work soon - this work is NOT the bike lanes, but preliminary work on the street. The County did not inform ANYBODY that they would be putting up these signs... They will start with fixing curbs and the pedestrian ramps at intersections to make them legal and safe. They will then remove the top layer of the street prior to repaving it. BEFORE anything happens regarding the bike lanes, residents along the street will receive NOTICE IN THE MAIL from the City about a public hearing. This hearing HAS NOT BEEN SET YET, but will be in May. Nothing has been finalized about parking yet.
The District 1 Community Council supports efforts to bring transportation dollars to our corner of the East Side! The proposed bike facilities on Upper Afton are one step in the effort to give people choices in how they get around, and are the result of a lengthy community process.
Beginning in 2011, we convened a neighborhood task force to work on a transportation plan for the district. This task force was made up of a diverse group of people with very divergent interests who spent the next 2 ½ years talking with and surveying neighbors about their transportation concerns. We held many public meetings, published surveys and results in the newspaper, and talked with literally hundreds of residents. The result of this process was our first-in-the-city neighborhood transportation plan, dealing with cars and parking, bicycles and pedestrians, commercial transportation, and transit. It laid out our neighborhood goals for assuring that we are well-connected to the rest of the city through whatever means of transportation each of us chooses. Building streets that meet everyone’s needs is vital.
Bringing bicycle connections to this part of town has been a top priority of our planning process for a variety of reasons: 1) to assure that the East Side receives its fair share of tax funds towards public improvements – to date the vast majority of these bicycle improvements have been on the western side of town; 2) to help in slowing traffic along key streets in the district and increasing safety for everyone as a result – our number one complaint from people is the speed of cars on neighborhood streets; 3) to provide neighborhood children a safe way to get to parks and rec centers; 4) to increase the number of eyes on the street to prevent crime – more bicyclists traveling slowly mean they are seeing what is happening all along their routes; 5) to provide transportation options for residents, particularly youth and low income residents without access to cars; 6) to increase opportunities for incorporating healthy activities in people’s daily lives; and 7) to assure that people who want to get to places all over the city of Saint Paul, without resorting to driving, can do so safely.
The District 1 Community Council has been involved in planning many transportation projects for our neighborhoods and the East Side – from dealing with park-and-ride and rail traffic problems, to Gateway and Red Rock Corridor transit planning, to mapping out bicycle routes that make sense for people, to putting in sidewalks and lighting for pedestrians. We welcome this opportunity to help plan for a significant east-west bicycle connection for the East Side, and to implement important traffic calming along this vital neighborhood street.
