District 1 Community Council Committees
Joining our committees as a community representative is one way to have an impact in your neighborhood. Call us for information on how to participate. Note that although community members are welcome to attend meetings, individuals assigned by the Committee Chairs are the only ones allowed to vote. There are three committees of the Council: Land Use, Communications, Youth Programming and Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee oversees the financial health, personnel and general governance of the Council.
The Council is funded through contracts with the City of St. Paul. We also seek grants from foundations for special projects, and donations from area residents.
The Executive Committee ensures that the council spends its money wisely, meets the funding requirements of our contracts and our donors, deals fairly with our personnel, and obeys legal requirements of 501(c)3 charitable organizations.
Land Use Committee
The Land Use Committee oversees land use and zoning issues in the district. It has the authority to determine the organization's position on issues. This might include new developments that are proposed for the area, lot splits, variance requests on projects, and transportation.
We regularly receive notices from the city regarding land and property. Each proposal is evaluated in terms of district interests, community plans and a legal framework. Our opinions are weighed by city officials as they make their final decision on the proposals.
The Land Use Committee makes every effort to understand neighborhood concerns and weigh them against authorized area plans. The role of the Committee is to voice the opinion of our residents – we do not determine what the city chooses to do for any issue.
Communications (formerly COSCo)
The Communication Committee assists with outreach and safety in our district.
This committee addresses ways we share information between the city, county and our residents. They are also involved in planning events and including all members of our community in our work.
Our safety efforts focus is on helping build connections among neighbors as a crime prevention approach.
